CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF IMPACT

Projects

Foundation LAILA’s work in practice

See our work in action, creating opportunities for children and families with Down Syndrome.

2021: FRIENDS DON’T COUNT CHROMOSOMES

This project provided children from the Brčko District of BiH, diagnosed with Down Syndrome, a safe environment with a tailored plan and program of work, engaging with professional therapists and support workers to promote their development and socialisation skills. Early support is very important due to the associated disorders that accompany Down Syndrome, as well as the stimulation of psychomotor development. These interventions are often neglected in the early years, as professional engagement and support for families with Down Syndrome is limited or non-existent. The project provided support and a safe environment for children and parents in dire need of help and counselling, as well as education and information about further assistance programs.

As a result, the living conditions of families with children with Down Syndrome in the Brčko District of BiH were improved through developmental and psychosocial empowerment. Our activities enhanced parental competencies through empowerment and communication skills, further strengthening the self confidence of the children.

Total budget: 12.134,19 BAM
Co-Financed by Government of Brčko District: 7670,00 BAM
LAILA Foundation’s participation through fundraising and founder’s donation: 4,464.1 BAM.
The fundraising was developed with the support of Tuzla Community Foundation
and their doniraj.ba platform.

2022: PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT

The main aim of the project was the provision of professional support to children with Down Syndrome from pre-school to school age and their parents. The activities included the work of a professional team of pedagogue-psychologist, speech therapist, psychologist and physical education teacher and special education teacher across a two-month delivery period.

As a result, enhancement was noted in children’s development and the overall wellbeing of the families.

2022: CONVERSATION WITH THE EXPERT TEAM OF THE FOUNDATION LAILA

The project was designed to provide support to parents of children with developmental disabilities in Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Aware of the challenges and difficulties that parents face in their daily lives, our expert team dedicated a day to offering free professional advice and answering various questions.
The expert team consisted of a pedagogue-psychologist, a special education teacher and a speech therapist. Through consultations, they helped parents better understanding how to cope with the specific challenges of their children. Parents had the opportunity to ask questions related to developmental issues, communication techniques, learning adjustments, how to adequately support their child’s emotional growth, puberty, etc.

As a result, this project allowed parents to receive firsthand professional guidance, emotional support, and practical recommendations for the next steps in caring for their children.

2023: STRONG, STRONGER, I

With the participation of 40 mothers of children with developmental disabilities and chronic diseases from the area of Brčko District of BiH this project was extremely successful in terms of strengthening the mental health of mothers. They had the opportunity to learn new skills, connect with other mothers and empower themselves to face the challenges of their unique situation. The workshops provided a safe space for mothers to express their fears, worries and frustrations. Through discussions and workshops, the participants received tools for managing stress, anxiety and negative thoughts. Through various topics such as setting boundaries, time management, and keeping a sleep diary, mothers gained practical skills that helped them maintain a balance between caring for their children and their mental health. Furthermore, the presentation of handbooks created by the project managers provided a permanent resource for the participants. Handbooks are not just books; they have become a symbol of the strength and support that we can provide to the members of our community.

As a result, each mother not only learnt how to embed new strategies and skills, they were also given a tool to use in their moments of challenge, a reminder that they are not alone and that there are resources available.
